Six individuals on 16 Aug 2024 received their HTX scholarships during the Singapore Police Force Scholarship and MHA Scholarships Ceremony. Among them was Jaren Chua, who will be studying Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, United States.
Let’s get to know him better!
Hi Jaren, why did you choose HTX?
I chose HTX because of its wide range of expertise. For example, I was struck by how Q Team uses the latest AI research to improve Home Team operations, how xCloud adopts and streamlines innovations to realise their full potential, and how Hatch works with deep tech startups worldwide to find technological solutions in public safety and security for the Home Team.
Was there a particular incident that helped you make up your mind?
My visit to HTX’s Scholarship Assessment Centre gave me a glimpse into the operations of HTX. This, together with what I learned about HTX’s partnerships with industry, academia, and government, made me fully appreciate HTX’s mission of advancing science and technology to secure Singapore’s future.
What were your childhood inspirations which sparked your interest in tech?
I used to watch Crimewatch while growing up. I remember being struck by how efficiently the various departments of the Home Team were able to deduce and retrieve information from one other to identify suspects. I’ve always wondered how this seamless integration of data and technologies – which ensures Singapore’s safety and security – was made possible.
As a budding computer engineer, what are your research and development (R&D) aspirations?
I am drawn to homeland security technologies such as HTX’s ALLURE, HoloDex, and multi-sensory extended reality training systems. As such, my aspiration is to specialise in cutting edge R&D which uses emerging technologies to bolster Singapore’s homeland security for the benefit of Singaporeans.
What drives your interest in Singapore’s homeland security?
Being surrounded by larger countries with diverse political environments, Singapore faces complex and unique security challenges. As a result, Singapore often develops innovative ways to solve various homeland security threats, and I want to be part of the trendsetters leading the development of technologies that drive these solutions.
