Six individuals on 16 Aug 2024 received their HTX scholarships during the Singapore Police Force Scholarship and MHA Scholarships Ceremony. Among them was Joel Ong, who will be studying Computer Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Let’s get to know him better!

Why did you choose HTX?

After reading about HTX and its various projects, I was impressed by how it leverages innovation to bring to life ideas that address a spectrum of societal needs and augment Home Team operations. The prospect of making the lives of Singaporeans better is something that excites and motivates me.

Where does your passion for technology stem from?

My fascination with technology comes from its boundless potential to transform lives. From automating mundane tasks to providing solutions to global issues, technology empowers us to create meaningful change. I hope to bring life to innovative ideas with a career in technology, and turn them into meaningful applications that create societal value.

Are you excited about studying Computer Engineering at NUS?

Yes! Technology is an ever-evolving landscape and there is always something new and exciting to discover and learn. I recently completed a handful of courses – Fundamentals of Python Programming, ITIL 4 and Certified Ethical Hacker – and realised that I had merely scratched the surface of IT and its potential. In HTX, I will be surrounded by peers who each have their own expertise and I’m excited to learn from all of them.

Why do you wish to enhance Singapore’s homeland security?

Growing up in Singapore, I have benefitted from a safe and inclusive society. Comparing Singapore to other regions in the world, I have come to realise how blessed I am to live in such an environment, and that this is something I have taken for granted. As such, I wish to do my part to preserve this for everyone.

Can you share with us something cool you did recently?

I had the privilege of contributing to the organisation of the 2023 National Day Parade! My responsibilities included coordinating matters with multiple departments to enable a seamless execution of the parade’s activities. This stint not only honed my leadership and collaborative skills but also exposed me to the vast intricacies involved in ensuring security for this yearly event. Participating in this event also imbued a spirit of unity and community service within me, inspiring me to do more to give back to the nation.
