Six individuals on 16 Aug 2024 received their HTX scholarships during the Singapore Police Force Scholarship and MHA Scholarships Ceremony. Among them was Seth Ng who will be studying Chemistry with Molecular Physics at Imperial College London, UK. Let’s get to know him better!
Hi Seth, why did you choose HTX?
I chose HTX because it will give me an opportunity to contribute to society. To be able to see a project that you work hard for come to life – which people can benefit from – will give your career priceless meaning!
What do you find especially meaningful about HTX?
HTX’s innovation and research bolsters the safety and internal security of Singapore and protects civilians from threats both abroad and within.
What are your interests in science and technology (S&T)?
I am passionate about S&T have the good fortune to pursue my interest in chemistry at Imperial College London. I hope to eventually contribute to HTX’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) Centre of Expertise – especially its efforts to curb terrorism by detecting and preventing the smuggling of explosives and dangerous chemicals. Outside of chemistry, I am also interested in robotics and forensics.
What other skills do you hope to develop?
I want to develop soft skills such as communication and leadership. In the 21st century, one’s academic ability is no longer enough – soft skills are ultimately more salient! These days, the abilities to lead, speak publicly, and think critically are what drive an organisation forward.
How do you plan to benefit from this precious opportunity to study overseas?
I look forward to immersing myself in a different environment and culture, and meeting and learning from people from different countries and backgrounds. I also look forward to the opportunity to intern overseas as it will allow me to experience a different work culture which can shape my future career. In addition, this experience will make me more independent. I believe this change of pace and the new environment would make this a fun and meaningful experience for me!
