HTX launched its inaugural profiling course from 4-8 September 2023, training 25 officers from the Home Team and other Singapore government agencies in profiling knowledge and skills. The topics and skills covered in the course include Threat-Oriented Person Screening Integrated System (TOPSIS), Tell-Tale Indicators (TTIs), and Credibility Assessment technologies.

HTX’s Biometrics and Profiling (B&P) Centre of Expertise (CoE), which was one of the co-developers of the course, has developed significant capabilities in profiling since its inception, in particular, automated TTI detection and Credibility Assessment technologies.

The profilers from B&P CoE have collaborated extensively with the TOPSIS community as well as investigators from the Home Team and other Singapore government agencies in key projects such as developing TTI detection analytics and evaluating contactless lie detectors. The new profiling course will greatly accelerate the growth of the network of profilers in Singapore, who include TOPSIS specialists, polygraphers, investigators, and Ops-Tech officers.

What did the trainees think of the course? Chia Boon Liang (Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau) said, “The trainers were very knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about their topics and the training.”

Mohamed Amran Bin Mohamed Amin (Immigration and Checkpoints Authority) shared, “It is a good eye-opener where I learned about profiling concept from knowledgeable and charismatic trainers.” Mohammed Hussain Deen (Airport Police Division) added, “I got to understand the insights of profiling, polygraph, as well as the latest technology.”

Some trainees have also thought about possible applications of their new profiling skills and knowledge. Gabriel Ng (Singapore Prison Service) said, “This course allowed me to hear for the first time about the usefulness of profiling in shared case studies and real life such as TOPSIS which prompts the possibility for profiling to be used in prisons.”
