It is a big vision, and a key agency which is helping to make it happen, is HTX, working very hard with key agencies and tech companies.
“Look at the sea – unmanned vessels which can eventually talk to each other, patrol our territorial waters, can do firefighting, and help with intelligence work. Drones and robots on land, which can carry out many of the duties of patrolling, search & rescue. Robots which can do firefighting, and also carry equipment and stretchers. Sensors across the island.
“Multiply these platforms, all linked up, talking to each other, intelligent platforms, intelligent robots, to allow real time 24/7 sensemaking and response across land, sea and air, identifying security threats and intrusions, law and order issues, leak of hazardous materials, much more,” Minister Shanmugam said.
“You will be joining an organisation that is putting technology at the front and centre, in addition to people, to really deliver for Singaporeans,” he said.

Contributing back to the community with science & tech
This year, nine of the 13 civilian scholars were awarded scholarships on the Science and Technology track, a reflection of the importance of technology to the Home Team’s work.
One of them, Cheryl Kwek Tze Theng, who was awarded a Singapore Government Scholarship (SGS), will be studying Computer Science at the Singapore University of Technology & Design. Cheryl has a passion for robotics and was the chairperson of the robotics club at Raffles Girls’ School.
“Being a part of HTX will allow me the opportunity to pursue my interest in technology and to apply my technical knowledge in meaningful work that will give back to the community,” said Cheryl, who interned with HTX’s Data Science & AI team in June. “I look forward to being at the forefront of emerging technologies and innovating new solutions to enhance the Home Team's capabilities and safeguard the public.”

Another SGS recipient, Gabriel Phua Junrong, will be studying Information Security at the National University of Singapore.
“HTX’s unique mission to utilise technologies to exponentially impact our nation’s security truly aligns with my passion,” Gabriel said. “I believe HTX is where I belong and where I would be able to utilise the skill sets I will be learning to contribute to the nation’s safety and security.”

For Local Merit Scholarship recipient Muadz Yamani Bin Mustafa, working on the SCDF motorised stretcher during his internship with HTX’s Robotics, Automation & Unmanned Systems (RAUS) Centre of Expertise was particularly meaningful, as he saw how science & tech can help impact lives.
Muadz also worked on a glove project during his internship. The glove, which provides haptic feedback to the user, can be further adapted for various innovative solutions, including soft robotics. He will be studying computer engineering at the National University of Singapore after completing his national service.
“My time in HTX has also allowed me to collaborate with other Home Team agencies, presenting me with a great overview of the diverse work being done. The decision to be part of the Home Team resonated with me even further upon observing how my father contributes to the country as a Prison Officer,” Muadz said. “I am excited to join the ranks of the Home Team.”
